OFL teachers emphasize the importance of having a DREAM. The dream is the “hook” to keep students in school and on track. Ideally, their diploma is a major stepping stone in making their dream a reality. The Charter School creates learning strategies customized to fit each student. The program uses independent study built around the student’s Individualized Performance Plan and regular student-teacher interaction.
James Catterall Ph.D., UCLA Graduate School of Education, has designed OFL’s intake assessments, progress measurements and post assessment tools.
Individualized
learning begins the moment a student walks in the
door. Teachers test enrolling students for academic competency
and assess their educational history and attitudes towards
the education process. Based on these assessments, an Individualized
Performance Plan is created which clearly outlines the student’s
responsibilities. To begin with, the Plan focuses the student
on no more than two core subjects. Advancement is based on
demonstrated mastery of the subject matter through tests,
presentations and projects.
